Mobile spark plug replacement
Misfires, rough idle and a stumble under load almost always come back to spark plugs. Mobile spark plug replacement brings the right plugs for your engine to your driveway and fixes it in one visit.
Spark plugs, replaced where the car sits
Spark plugs are the ignition system's wear item. Over tens of thousands of miles the electrodes erode, the gap widens and the plug needs more voltage to fire. The coil works harder, the mixture doesn't burn cleanly and you get misfires, hesitation, a rough idle and worse fuel economy. Eventually the check engine light comes on with a misfire code.
Mobile spark plug replacement is one of the most common jobs a mobile mechanic does. The mechanic brings the manufacturer-specified plugs, checks the coils and boots while they're off, torques the new plugs correctly and clears the codes. On most four-cylinders it's under an hour.

What mobile spark plug replacement includes
Done properly, it's more than pulling plugs and pushing new ones in:
- Manufacturer-specified plugs: iridium, platinum or copper, in the correct heat range and gap
- Inspection of the old plugs, which tells the mechanic how the engine is running: oil fouling, lean burn, detonation
- Ignition coil, boot and wire inspection, with replacement of any that are cracked, carbon-tracked or testing weak
- Correct torque on every plug, which prevents stripped threads and loose plugs
- Dielectric grease on the boots and a diagnostic scan to clear misfire codes and confirm the fix
- Intake plenum removal and reinstall where the rear plugs sit under it, with new gaskets
Plugs or coils? Often both
A worn plug makes the coil work harder, and a weak coil can't fire even a good plug properly. If the misfire is on one cylinder, the mechanic swaps the coil to another cylinder and sees whether the misfire follows it; if it does, that coil is replaced. Coil-on-plug systems make this test quick and accurate.
If the car has a misfire code and the plugs are overdue, replacing the plugs usually fixes it. If the plugs are fresh and the misfire persists, the mobile car diagnostic moves on to coils, injectors and compression. Either way, the test happens before parts are replaced.
How often spark plugs need replacing
Iridium and platinum plugs, which most cars built in the last fifteen years use, last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Copper plugs last around 30,000. Check your manual or ask the mechanic. Turbocharged and direct-injection engines are harder on plugs and often call for shorter intervals.
If you don't know when the plugs were last changed and the car has over 80,000 miles, assume they're due. A plug change pairs naturally with a mobile tune-up that covers filters, belt and fluids in the same visit.
Signs your spark plugs are due
Rough idle
The engine shakes at a stop. Worn plugs misfire most at low rpm.
Misfire code
P0300 through P0308 on the scanner. Plugs are the first thing to check.
Hesitation
A stumble when you accelerate. Worn plugs can't fire under load.
Hard starting
Long cranks, especially cold. Weak spark.
Flashing check engine light
Active misfire. Stop driving; it's damaging the catalytic converter.
High mileage, unknown history
Over 80,000 miles with no record of a plug change means they're due.
What mobile spark plug replacement costs
Plugs plus labor, quoted up front for your engine. The number of cylinders and how hard the plugs are to reach drive the price: a four-cylinder with plugs on top is quick, a V6 with rear plugs under the intake takes longer. Coils are quoted separately if testing shows they're needed. No shop overhead, no tow. The mobile mechanic cost page covers how quotes work.
Plugs are cheap. The catalytic converter a long-running misfire ruins is not.
Quality parts from national suppliers, priced the same as a shop pays.
Quoted for the job, not for the hours you'd spend in a waiting room.
The mechanic comes to the car.
Changes get your approval first.

Mobile spark plug replacement FAQ
Can spark plugs be replaced in my driveway?
Yes. The mechanic brings the plugs for your engine and the tools to reach them, including removing the intake plenum where needed. It's a routine on-site job.
How long does it take?
Under an hour for most four-cylinders. V6 and V8 engines with hard-to-reach plugs take two to three hours.
Will new plugs fix my misfire?
If the plugs are worn, almost always. The mechanic tests the coils as well and scans after the job to confirm the misfire is gone.
Do you use the plugs my manufacturer specifies?
Yes. The wrong plug type or heat range causes misfires and can damage coils. The mechanic brings the correct spec.
