Lake Ontario snow and salt

Rochester's winters bring lake-effect snow, deep cold that drains batteries and months of salt that rust out brake lines and rockers. Spring potholes on 490 and 590 bend wheels, and humid summers strain A/C. On-site battery, brake and rust service keeps Monroe County drivers moving.

Getting around

Getting around Rochester

I-490I-590I-390I-90NY 104NY 531

Rochester is a compact city with an unusually complete expressway system for its size. I-490 runs east to west straight through downtown, linking Gates and Chili on the west side with Brighton, Pittsford and the Thruway near Victor on the east. I-390 heads south from Greece past the airport toward Henrietta and the Southern Tier, and I-590 runs along the eastern side of the city between I-390 and the 490, continuing north as NY 590 toward Irondequoit and the lake.

NY 104 crosses the north side as an east-west expressway through Greece, Irondequoit and Webster, crossing Irondequoit Bay on its way toward Wayne County, and NY 531 brings commuters in from Spencerport and Ogden. Downtown traffic is lighter than in bigger cities, but the interchange of the 490 and 590 in Brighton, known locally as the Can of Worms, backs up at rush hour and is a familiar place for a car to stall in traffic. The Thruway skirts the southern suburbs, where Henrietta and Victor draw heavy shopping and commuter traffic.

Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport sits just southwest of downtown off I-390, close enough that a car stuck in long-term parking is a short trip for a mobile mechanic. RTS buses connect downtown with the University of Rochester, RIT and the suburbs, and the Genesee River splits the city east and west, with several bridges downtown and fewer as you head north toward Charlotte and Lake Ontario.

Where we come to you

Around Rochester, where the car sits

1

Downtown and the East End

Office towers, the Eastman School of Music and the theater district around East Avenue and Gibbs Street. Parking garages are the practical place for a repair; give the level and the space.

2

Park Avenue and the Neighborhood of the Arts

Large older homes, apartments and narrow shared driveways off Park and University avenues near the Memorial Art Gallery. Street parking is competitive, so a mechanic often works in a side drive.

3

South Wedge

A walkable neighborhood south of downtown along South Avenue, close to the river and Highland Park. Tight streets and older garages make curbside repairs common.

4

19th Ward

Big older houses with long driveways on the southwest side, across the river from the University of Rochester. Detached garages and deep lots give plenty of room to work.

5

North Winton Village

Tree-lined streets of colonials and bungalows on the east side near Winton Road. Driveways and detached garages make it one of the easier city neighborhoods for on-site repair.

6

University of Rochester and Strong

The River Campus, Strong Memorial Hospital and the medical center complex south of downtown. Staff and student lots are busy, so check permit rules and give exact directions to the car.

7

RIT and Henrietta

RIT's campus, the student apartments around it and the long commercial stretch of Jefferson Road. Large lots, plenty of student cars and a steady need for batteries and brakes.

8

Greece and Irondequoit lakeshore

Suburban neighborhoods along Lake Ontario north of the city, with attached garages and wide driveways. Lake wind and heavier snow near the shore add their own winter wear.

Local conditions

What Lake Ontario winters do to cars in Rochester

1

Rochester's winters are long, gray and snowy.

Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario usually falls heaviest east of the city, and a cloudy stretch can last for weeks with snow piling up a little at a time. Cold mornings sap batteries, thickened oil slows starters, and cars that live outside without a garage end up with frozen locks, stuck wipers and weak defrosters right when visibility matters most. Ice storms, when they come, coat cars and can bring down branches onto driveways.

2

Months of salt do the slow damage.

County and state crews keep the roads heavily treated, and the brine creeps into the places drivers never see: ABS sensor wiring and connectors, battery cable ends, brake hardware clips and the seams along wheel wells. Wheel speed sensors that corrode and set off warning lights are a familiar Rochester repair, and so are rotors that develop a thick rust lip, parking brakes that stick and exhaust clamps that crumble. Washing the underbody on milder winter days slows it down.

3

Spring thaws open potholes on city streets and the expressways alike, and summer turns humid enough to make weak air conditioning obvious.

The Genesee Valley's fall color comes with wet leaves that clog cowl drains and sunroof drains, sending water into cabins and onto electrical components. Summer heat is rarely extreme here, but a car idling in traffic on the 490 will still overheat when a cooling fan or thermostat is on its way out. Fall is also the best time to deal with a marginal battery, brake service and winter tires before the snow settles in for the season.

Questions

Rochester FAQ

Do you serve Greece, Webster and Pittsford?

Yes. Rochester mobile mechanics typically cover Monroe County, including Brighton, Pittsford, Greece, Irondequoit, Webster, Henrietta and Fairport.

Do mobile mechanics work in winter?

Yes. A garage or carport helps, but most repairs can be done outdoors.

Can you replace rusted brake lines on-site?

In most cases, yes.

Does lake-effect snow east of the city delay appointments in Webster or Penfield?

Sometimes, but usually only briefly. A strong band off Lake Ontario can drop heavy snow on the eastern towns while the city stays clear, and the mechanic may push a visit back a few hours until the roads are plowed and it is safe to work. Urgent problems such as a no-start still get priority, and a cleared driveway or open garage makes the repair go faster.

I'm a student at RIT or the University of Rochester. Can a mechanic come to campus?

Usually. Both campuses have parking permits and lot rules, so give the lot name and any restrictions you know about. Batteries that die after breaks, worn brakes and check-engine diagnostics are the usual student jobs. Off-campus apartments in Henrietta and near the River Campus are also easy to reach, and the repair can happen while you are in class.

My city house has a narrow shared driveway. Is that a problem?

Not usually. Shared driveways are common in Rochester's older neighborhoods, from the Park Avenue area to the 19th Ward. Many common repairs can be finished in a single visit with the car pulled to one side, leaving room for a neighbor to pass. Give your neighbor a heads-up, and mention the setup when you reach out so the mechanic knows where to park.
